Asphalt Patching

Asphalt Deterioration and Water
The most common cause for asphalt deterioration is the accumulation of water in low areas.  Over time, water accumulation can cause asphalt to crack and separate or alligator, as it commonly referred to in the paving industry.  Our harsh Minnesota winters and the continual freeze/thaw process is a contributing factor in waer issues.

Asphalt Deterioration and Weight

Commercial parking lots and roadways require more foundation during construction in order to properly bear the weight of heavy trucks and loads on a daily basis.  The constant bearing weight of these types of vehicles will cause asphalt that has not been constructed properly to crack and deteriorate before its time.  At Metro Paving, we take the time to fully understand your project and how your new pavement will be used.  Our design team can then help you dtermine the proper foundation and applications for you

Asphalt Patching | Our Methods

  • Surface patch
  • Mill patch
  • Remove and Replace

Surface patching is recommended when the underlying base is structurally sound.  This process is typically used on depressed surfaces.   We first thoroughly clean the area to be repaired and apply a liquid tack coat commonly known as asphalt glue.  Next , new hot mixed asphalt is placed on the patched area and machine rolled for a smooth, compacted, and durable surface.  Using this method will cause the newly finished surface to be slightly higher.  To complete the finish, we blend the edges to ensure the entire surface is level and ready for use.

Mill patching is similar to surface patching except the patch areas are milled down, not blended, to ensure a flush tie with the existing asphalt.  This is mostly used in tight drainage or trip point areas.

Remove and replace is a process used for areas that are more severely deteriorated.  When the underlying base material has been affected, the remove and replace proces is necessary.

When using the asphalt remove and replace method, we start by saw cutting out the area to be patched.  Next we excavate the area to a pre-determined depth based on your sub-soil.  A new aggregate base is installed to create a solid foundation for your new pavement.  Finally, new asphalt is placed and compacted smooth.

Asphalt Patching is Economical
All three applications noted are economical components of an overall pavement maintenance program.  Timely asphalt patching prevents more extensive and costly repairs down the road and creates a safer environment thus reducing owner liability.
